The Go-Go's

About Our Lips Are Sealed

"Our Lips Are Sealed" is a song co-written by Jane Wiedlin, guitarist for The Go-Go's, and Terry Hall, singer for The Specials and Fun Boy Three. It was first recorded by The Go-Go's as the opening track on their album Beauty and the Beat (1981) and was their debut American single in June 1981. The single eventually reached the top 5 in Australia and Canada, and the top 20 in the United States. Although originally written and performed with three verses, an abbreviated version of the song appears on Beauty and the Beat. In 1983, Hall's band, Fun Boy Three, released their version of "Our Lips Are Sealed". Issued as a single, the track became a top ten hit in the UK, and remains the best known version of "Lips" in that country. The recording of it by The Go-Go's, while a bigger hit elsewhere, only made #47 in the UK. In 2000, Rolling Stone named "Our Lips Are Sealed" one of the 100 Greatest Pop Songs of all time.more »

"Our Lips Are Sealed" first originated from Jane Wiedlin, who is a member of The Go-Gos band. She co-wrote it with Terry Hall, who is a member of the Fun Boy Three and The Specials.

Inspiration

The song concept was inspired by a brief romantic affair between Terry Hall and Jane Wiedlin. They wrote the lyrics separately, with Wiedlin in America and Hall in England, sending each other lyrics via post.

Popularity

The Go-Go's version was more popular in the USA, reaching the top 20 in the Billboard Hot 100 in 1981.

Genre

Fusing post-punk and new wave sounds, "Our Lips Are Sealed" helped to define the 80's pop-music landscape.

Fun Boy Three version

The Fun Boy Three version, while not as commercially successful as The Go-Go's, was praised for its moody and slowed down arrangement. It reached number 7 in the UK Singles Chart in 1983.

The song has been covered by numerous artists, including the power pop band The Knack, punk band The Hippos, and singer Hilary Duff.

Music Videos

Legacy

The song has since become a pop and new wave classic. It was ranked 8th on the Rolling Stone's list of 100 Greatest Pop Songs in 2000, and in 2006, it was listed in Pitchfork Media's 200 Greatest Songs of the 80's.

Song meaning

While the catchy chorus presents a universal theme of secret keeping, Terry Hall has stated that the song was about the media and how it's always trying to break into the lives of public figures, keeping their secrets 'unsealed'.
